Overview

WildBrain is looking for a Head of FX to join our team!

 

As Head of FX (CG) you will push innovation, quality, efficiency and evolution in our FX department.  This transformative role will select and mentor our FX supervisors, influence and guide our FX tool development, and implement studio best practices for high end episodic workflows for our FX department working a combination of Maya, Houdini, Nuke and Unreal. 

 

You will standardize procedure and leverage institutional knowledge through basecamp to ensure our productions are set up for success.  You will also be directing supervisor protocol and bring innovative techniques to give our shows a competitive advantage that makes them best in class.  As a leader, you will ensure our teams meet creative goals through the resources and time that have been given.  To achieve this you will establish structure, process, and mentor all who are on your team. 

 

Reporting to the VP, Production and VP, Technology, and SVP, Creative, the FX HOD is ultimately responsible for driving the direction of our CG FX department and outlining the path that we will pursue and develop to as we continue to be amazing storytellers.  The successful candidate will bring excellence in their leadership, fx, and communication skills.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

What You’ll Do:

  • Mentor the FX supervisors and implement best practices to encourage a growth mindset.
  • Manage the recruitment and casting of FX supervisors to best support production
  • Communicate with the FX teams to build a high functioning team dynamic.
  • Define and re-evaluate our FX processes, workflows and tools to support and further the FX department’s toolset in conjunction with production and pipeline.   
  • Collaborate with fellow Heads of Departments to ensure our teams continue to work together towards the same goals and timelines
  • Participate in Studio Senior Management sessions by offering thoughts and ideas to improve the quality and performance of the FX department for upcoming projects
  • Participate in new project bids defining capabilities, costs, and process.

What You’ll Bring:

  • 5+ years’ experience leading and supervising FX teams in film and television
  • A passion for building up and mentoring others to be better supervisors and artists
  • Demonstrable knowledge of modern FX practices in Houdini, Maya, Unreal, Nuke and their application in breaking down complex FX problems to solutions achievable within budget and schedule
  • Intimate knowledge of SideFX Houdini (sop, flip, pyro, rbd, vellum)
  • Good knowledge of Nuke, Arnold and Shotgrid
  • Ability to build and implement scalable fx-rigs and implement FX libraries
  • Extensive knowledge of CG pipelines and workflows.

 

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working in studios with multiple concurrent projects.
  • Experience with cloth, groom, destruction toolsets
  • Experience developing with Python, or other object-oriented programming language
  • Experience defining and collaborating on tools and software in a professional environment

 

Pay Range: $160,000 -175,000 per year.
